The 2004 Motor Show calendar kicked off in style this January with the AUTOSPORT International Show at the NEC in Birmingham. This was a show that had everything for the motor racing enthusiast including a number of top racing celebrities and hundreds of stands featuring everything from Alloy Wheels and performance parts, to the latest supercars from Porsche and Ferrari.
Once again, AUTOSPORT have set a very high standard that the other car exhibitions of 2004 are going to have to follow. The only possible criticism that could be levelled at the show is that it was open to the public for only two days. So much was packed into that short space of time, making it impossible to see everything in the detail that it deserved. Let's hope that the success of this year's show will enable it to be open for longer next year.
Famous names at the show included many established drivers such as BAR driver Jenson Button, 2003 WRC champion Petter Solberg, and Justin Wilson who opened the show to the public on Saturday morning.
The various stage areas hosted interview after interview featuring many of the current and future stars of British motor sport. So we were able to hear first hand of Justin Wilson's frustration that he's not yet secured a drive for 2004, and conversely learnt of BAR test driver Anthony Davidson's hopes that his current BAR test driver position will lead to an F1 drive in 2005.
There was also a chance to hear the views of British IRL IndyCar Series driver Dan Wheldon who is looking forward to a serious attempt at the title this year, as Honda battle back against Toyota. Meanwhile, Solberg vowed to go flat out to hold onto his WRC title, and Mark Blundell tipped Shumacher to also retain his F1 title in 2003. We don't think many are going to bet against that prediction, though no doubt his brother Ralph and Montoya, the drivers at the helm of the new FW26 Williams will once again be doing everything they can to stop him, as will Kimi Raikkonen and David Coultard in their MP4-19 McLarens.
Not surprisingly, F1 was a major aspect of the show, with a superb line up of cars from the 2003 championship arranged on a Grand Prix starting grid with Schuey's red Ferrari in P1. Set back slightly on its left in P2 was the blue and white FW25, representing Williams' 2nd place in last year's constructor's championship.
Major Manufacturer's were well represented on the stands, though undoubtedly the highlight was the collection of Ferraris covering the entire history of the prancing horse, right up to the Ferrari Enzo Supercar.
Also on display for the first time in the UK was the production version of the fabulous Porsche Carrera GT which shared its place on the Porsche stand with a regular 911 Carrera, and a Porsche Carrera Cup Car.
Component manufacturers and fuel suppliers including big names like Koni, Ferodo, Goodyear and Shell demonstrated the advantages of their latest products, and many of the top motoring magazines offered opportunities to subscribe to their publications at discounted rates. There were also opportunities to sign up for an introduction to motor sport from track specialists, drive a go-kart, or to take a spin as a passenger on the Comma Caterham slalom course.
Hundreds of trade stands displayed the wares of the top manufacturers of every conceivable motor sport product from clothes to components. Not many will have visited the show without taking the opportunity to pick up at least one bargain from the myriad of products on offer.
