Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the
Porsche 911
In 2003, one of the world's most famous sports cars celebrated its 40th
anniversary.
This unique vehicle has evolved so much through the years, and yet remains
true to its original concept. Every single one of the 911s produced over
the years has the same distinctive type of shape that is unmistakeably 911,
and throughout the 40 years of its history the flat six engine has remained at
the rear of the car - a layout that is uniquely Porsche, and which
provides a driving experience similar to no other car on the roads.
Despite these common threads running through the five generations of
vehicles, the company have rarely produced two identical cars - in the early
years the vehicles were evolving almost car by car, and today the Porsche
brand boasts one of the largest range of optional extras of any manufacturer
so that buyers can have the car built to their own precise specifications.
Over the years, the 911 has faced many challengers, and undoubtedly there
have been some faster cars and even better cars that have come and gone; some
of the very best competition came from Porsche itself, and one of the best
ever was even a variation on the 911 - for example the 959 supercar. But
throughout the years, nothing has touched the 911's dominance as the best
drivers car in its price range.
Over four decades, nothing has come close in terms of value for
money. Occasionally another manufacturer can match the 911 in terms of
the price / performance ratio, but comparatively high residuals of Porsche
cars makes ownership a better proposition than many other cars which have much
higher levels of depreciation.
Thanks to legendary Porsche build quality, and the care and attention of
owners, many of the original 911s, and indeed the ancestors of the 911, have
survived to this day. The company claim that two thirds of all Porsche's
ever made survive to this day. (This would be a remarkable feat for any
car, but is even more amazing considering how many 911s have found their way
into the motor racing arena). So it wasn't a big surprise that we were
able to see a line up of cars representing nearly every one of the forty years
of its history at one of its many 40th birthday celebrations.
