Porsche Cayman S
Porsche have successfully introduced yet another new model to their
range. The Cayman model successfully bridges the gap between the
relatively inexpensive Boxster and the exclusive 911 range.
In terms of handling and performance the Cayman seems to have everything -
it shares the mid engine layout with its little brother the Boxster, but it
benefits from the extra body strength that a coupe roof brings. Its
engine is of course a development of the flat six engine with a capacity of
3.4 litres putting it between the 3.2 litre Boxster S and the 3.6, 3.8 or
larger capacities of the 911 range. The weight of the car is just 1340
Kg and yet it feels so solid and composed.
In the Cayman S, the flat six produces 291 bhp at 6,200 rpm and develops an
impressive 251 lb ft of torque at just 4,400 rpm which is enough to accelerate
the new Porsche from 0-62 mph in less than 5.5 seconds.
The new Cayman looks fantastic once you get used to it. At first, we
struggled with it as the eyes see the front and somehow the mind expects to
see the classic 911 shape, or else a convertible hood. To see the
Boxster / 911 front with a new rear is somewhat disturbing at first. But
as you come to terms with that, the beauty of Porsche's new creation begins to
dawn on you. Air intakes immediately behind the doors hint at the
engine's location in front of the wheels, and the coupe body sweeps down to
meet the defined rear wings. We have to admit that it has grown on us.
