Porsche Boxster S
... Continued
Reliability of the cars is very good, though some owners have problems. Plastic fittings on later models come in for some criticism, as do the wiper blades, sound systems and lights. But problems are normally minor, and most owners find that the dealers rectify any problems on new cars without question.
In the UK warranty is a miserly 2 years, which is strange for a vehicle from a prestige manufacturer such as Porsche. Warranty can be extended for quite some time, providing dealer servicing is carried out, though the warranty isn't cheap, and neither is the servicing. Many owners shop around for the best price, and take their own Mobil 1 to the dealer to avoid paying ridiculous prices for an already expensive commodity.
Owners of older cars complain of having to 'chop' the rear windscreen when lowering the convertible top - an action which involves getting out of the vehicle having half lowered the top, gently chopping the plastic rear screen at both sides, and then returning to the vehicle to the vehicle to complete the lowering operation. Thankfully since the MY03 cars arrived at the back end of 2002, the plastic screen has been replaced with a new, slightly smaller glass screen, making this operation unnecessary. Owners of 2003 and beyond cars can now lower their cars tops from the comfort of their driving seat without having to perform the 'Boxster chop'.
So you'll be forgiven for getting the impression that we rather like this car. Here's some of the other factors to consider if you're buying one:-
It's not the cheapest vehicle on the road to run, even though its residuals are quite good. Porsche options are expensive, as are the fees from the OPC (Official Porsche Centre).
Since this review was written, Porsche have replaced the car reviewed with the new Porsche Boxster 987. The new car feature many improvements over the outgoing model, including even higher power output from both the standard 987 and the 987 Boxster S. Yet the newcomer retains the style of the original. Having briefly tested the new model we like it even more than the 986 if that's possible.
Porsche have also introduced The Porsche Cayman - a coupe model based on the Boxster. The new Cayman features a 3.4l flat 6 engine and sits between the Boxster and 911 ranges in terms of both price and performance.
For more information about the Porsche Boxster, we recommend the new book by Porsche
authority Brian Long. Recently published by Veloce, and simply titled "Porsche Boxster" the book charts the history of the
Boxster in splendid detail.
