For more information about the Porsche Boxster, we recommend the new book by Porsche
authority Brian Long. Recently published by Veloce, and simply titled "Porsche Boxster" the book charts the history of the
Boxster in splendid detail.
The book starts with the history of Porsche and this will be familiar to many enthusiasts. But having written books on many other Porsche models, Long clearly knows his subject well and even the most ardent Porsche fan will find this coverage interesting and informative. And no Boxster book could be complete without adequate discussion of the heritage from which it evolved.
The book then moves on to a comprehensive study of the Boxter's evolution from concept to production. The variety of photos and artists' impressions of different two seater concepts in this section are perhaps the most interesting of the hundreds of pictures and illustrations in the book. We found this
chapter to be particularly informative as it includes so much that will be new and interesting to any Boxster owner.
Chapter 3 covers the production model and includes cut-away drawings and
numerous photos of the engine, gearbox and the other key components that most Boxster owners will never see in the metal. This section also deals with world reaction to the new Porsche, with brief mention of the other vehicles in the Porsche stable that
the new model joined on its release. In this section Long has taken the trouble to cover the vehicle's release in all the key world markets.
The remainder of the book covers the car's post launch development, including of course the release of the Boxster S, and the 2003 model year changes, which saw the Boxster's first major facelift and the introduction of the Variocam engine. Some of the pictures in this section are awesome, though some have been taken from the sales literature and will be only too familiar to Boxster
owners.
The main chapters of the book are backed up by five appendices which include a buyer's guide to the car, year by year model guides, engine specifications, chassis number ranges and Boxster sales and production figures.
Although first published in 2005, there is no coverage of the new model introduced for the 2005 Model Year. Rather, this is a comprehensive coverage of the Boxster from its evolution in the early 90s through to the end of the 986 range. No doubt Long is saving the 987 for a future publication - his previous works include separate volumes on each stage of the 911's evolution from 1963 to the present day.
With over 200 pages and 200 illustrations, this is a must read, and a great gift, for any Boxster owner or enthusiast. Priced at £34.99 / $59.95 USA it isn't cheap, but it is a good quality hardback and is unquestionably
very good value for money.
