Insurance and other information for UK Ford Cars.
Although an American company, with no car assembly plants in the UK (since 2001) we still consider the Ford a British car for some reason. Most UK models will be sourced from Belgium, Spain and Germany. Transit vans are still, at this time, manufactured in Britain, and the company still builds large numbers of engines at plants in Dagenham and Bridgend, and transmissions at Halewood. These are used in Ford vehicles, and in a number of cars by other manufactureres.
Ford are one of the top sellers of cars in the UK. A hugely popular range from the Ka to the Mondeo, and including the ever popular Focus ensures that there is no shortage of demand for these cars. Price levels are comparable with volume competitor Vauxhall and are a little cheaper than the equivalent VW or Audi.
Ford now offer a 3 year 60,000 mile warranty on most of their vehicles. Service intervals on new cars tend to be 12,500 miles or annually.
Insurance groups for Ford cars tend to be very good - a ready supply of dealers and spare parts keeps down the cost of repairs so you won't be paying over the odds to insure your Ford. The smaller cars, including the Ford Ka and Ford Fiesta start with an incredibly low group 2 rating so insurance for these will be very competitively priced. Models that are better kitted out, of course cost more. The StreetKa luxury models for example get a group 7 rating, as does the 1.6 Fiesta Ghia.
At the top of the Fiesta range, the Fiesta ST is insurance group 13, though that's not surprising as its 2.0 litre engine produces 150bhp which is sufficient to power the little car to 60mph in under 8 seconds, and on to a top speed of 129 mph.
Ford Fusions attract a group 4 or 5 rating.
The new Ford Focus range starts at insurance group 4 for a 1.4 studio or LX, rising to group 9 or 10 for some of the 2 litre Zetec engined cars and for some of the 2 litre diesels. This is quite low considering that with either 2 litre engine fitted a Focus can reach 60mph in around 9 seconds and a top speed of about 125 mph.
Ford Mondeo insurance starts at group 8 to 10 for most models according to engine and trim level. The exceptions here are the 2.2 TDCi 155 ST cars which attract a slightly higher rating, and the fast 3.0V6 cars which have sub 8 second 0-60 times, and as a result attract a group 16 rating.
The excellent C-Max range attracts insurance ratings anywhere from 5 for the 1.6 Studio, right up to 12 for the 2.0 litre Ghia and Ultima variants.
The big Galaxy people carriers are rated at group 11 through 13 for most models, though the 2.8 litre V6 Ghia attracts a group 16 rating, which seems high, though when compared to the the Peugeot 607 2.2 SE it's more than reasonable. Peugeot's top spec 607 (the 607 3.0 V6) gets a group 17 rating, though it is a little quicker than the Ford on the 0-60 sprint.
Ford GT insurance group not known at this time. Though only 4500 are to be made worldwide, and most of these will remain in the USA. Only 101 Ford GTs are to be officially imported to Europe (The same number as the original Ford GT40) and the first of these won't be for sale as it's going directly to the Ford Heritage Museum where it will probably remain forever. Of the remainder, 28 arrived this month and the first lucky owners (Mr Jeremy Clarkson included) have taken delivery. Insurance will be 20 + which means you'll have to contact your insurer for details - and only certain companies are even going to be prepared to quote.
