VW Golf Mk V
VW's new (2004) puts the original hot hatch back at
the top of the leader board. Build quality of the German mid
size hatch has always been fantastic, and the latest models continue
to set the standard.
The latest cars are available with a very wide range
of trim and engine options. The S model starts with a 1.4 litre
75PS engine and in 3 door format this achieves an economical insurance
group 4. If you go for the 1.9 litre TDI engine (105PS)
then you'll get great performance for and fuel economy, but insurance
group rises to 6.
The top spec Golf - the GTi - is features the
company's latest 2.0FSi engine which has an output of 200PS which
attracts a group 17 insurance rating.
Performance Specifications
Golf GTI 2.0 litre Turbo
0-60 is reached in around 7 seconds, thanks to the
200PS produced by the 2.0 litre engine. Peak torque of 207lb/ft
comes at only 1800 rpm which means that like earlier Golf Turbos, the
new GTI has can accelerate quickly from a standstill without any need
to rev the engine excessively.
Fuel consumption for the 3dr with manual gearbox is
an impressive 34.9 mpg for the combined cycle. CO2 emissions for
the manual are rated at 194g/km.
Golf GTI 2.0 litre Turbo DSG
With the company's awesome DSG gearbox fitted, the
official 0-60 time falls by a couple of tenths of a second - finally a
gearbox system that is actually faster than a traditional manual
gearbox. Combined cycle fuel consumption also improves very
slightly to 35.3 mpg and as a result the official CO2 rating falls to
192g/km.
