Porsche 911 (964) Carrera RS
Porsche 911 Carrera RS (964)
Carrera RS Performance Figures
This road legal version of the Carrera Cup racing car represents one of the
very best of the 964 series of Porsche 911s. Featuring a 3.6 litre
version of the famous air cooled flat six boxer engine producing 260bhp and
240lb/ft of torque, it was good for 0-60 in 5.3 seconds and a top speed of
162.
For such a large car its weight was slimmed down to a total of 1230Kg
largely thanks to the removal of much of the standard car's sound proofing and
the rear seats. Up front things were minimalist with cloth trimmed
Recaro seats rather than the more usual leather Porsche seats.
Compared to other Porsche 911s of its generation
Compared, for example, to the standard 1989 Carrera 4 these figures
represent a power boost of 10bhp and a weight saving of almost 220Kg, though
much of the extra weight of the Carrera 4 is due to its 4 wheel drive
system. The Carrera 4 had an identical top speed of 162mph, but took 0.4
seconds longer to reach 60 from zero, despite the fact that it could launch
itself off the line so much more rapidly thanks to its 4 wheel drive system
which it inherited from the 959 supercar.
Performance compared to today's Standards
Out of interest, the performance figures of both these 964 911s are very
similar to the latest Porsche Boxster S, which has an identical maximum power
output to the RS of 260bhp, and a very slightly higher top speed of
164mph. Though the Boxster weighs in at a slightly heavier 1320Kg,
explaining why its 0-60 time is 0.4 seconds slower at 5.7 seconds. (the
same time in fact as the 1989 Carrera 4).
These figures clearly demonstrate that even by today's standards the
Carrera RS was very quick indeed, as was the Carrera 4.
