Inside, the styling is as good and as original as the exterior, with hand stitched leather providing the quality feel of all top end Mercedes Benz cars, even if the red isn't to everyone's taste.
The position of the massive, front mid mounted engine is clearly shown in these shots. As it's set back from the front wheels, weight distribution is much better than on a traditional front engined car, giving the SLR a balance that matches that of the very best sports coupes. Add to that a sophisticated electronics system which gets the very best out of the chassis, even when driven to excess by a mortal driver, and you get the perfect package for the keen amateur driver. The SLR may not be quite as race honed as the similarly priced Porsche Carrera GT, but in most people's hands it will probably outperform the Porsche car.
The Mercedes SLR is almost guaranteed to win any game of top trumps. It can accelerate from 0-60 in 3.8 seconds, which makes it a 10th of a second faster than the Porsche Carrera GT thanks to its 626bhp 48 valve V8 engine. The SLR may be heavier than the Porsche and may have only a 14 bhp power advantage, but its engine has far more torque, delivering an incredible 574lb ft at 3,250 rpm. Even its 5 speed automatic gearbox can't sap the power - rather it makes the SLR's performance more manageable compared to the Porsche's 6 speed manual box.
In some ways, Porsche may have stolen Mercedes Benz McLaren's thunder by producing a car that in expert hands is technically superior, for there can be little doubt that the Porsche is the leaner and meaner of the two. But in terms of road going supercars, the SLR almost certainly is the best that 300,000 can buy.
