Here's a guide to more of the new cars we're looking forward to seeing in 2007.
FIAT's new Bravo will appear early in the new year, with some analysts predicting that it will be on show even before the Geneva show, and on sale in the first or second quarter of 2007. To our mind, the car borrows some style from stablemate Alfa Romeo, with hints of the new 8C about it from certain angles. This can certainly be no bad thing. It seems many manufacturers are tending towards more straight lines in their new designs, but for anyone wanting a sexy alternative to the Focus or Astra, the new Brava may well be worth a look. The range will include 120 and 150 bhp petrol engines. Pictures available soon.
The company have also just released a great new 100bhp sporty Panda which offers a tremendous / price ratio.
FIAT also have the beautifully retro Fiat 500 due to make an appearance at the shows from September 2007. The success of numerous retro looking models by competitors hasn't been lost on FIAT and early indications are that the revival of the 500 badge will be a huge success. Prices will start from just £7,000, though the range will also include sportier models, perhaps wearing the famous Arbath badge and priced at up to £11,000. The car is the result of development collaboration between Fiat and Ford and shares a platform with Ford's new City Car.
Ford's most important new car of 2007 is, of course the new Mondeo. The car is looking great, and will make an appearance in the new James Bond movie Casino Royale, as well as in a series of related adverts. Ford's recent launches have been impressive and no doubt the launch of the new Mondeo will be no exception.
Of course the new car needs to be great to compete in a sector that is already packed with great cars; VW's Passat, Vauxhall's Vectra and Toyota's Avensis are tough competition, and all four cars are aiming at the 'executive' BMWs, Mercedes and Audis, as well as fighting off competition from a number of other manufacturers.
Ford will also release a new City Car towards the end of 2007 (or perhaps in early 2008?)
Korean manufacturer Hyundai's new Arnejs shares a platform with Kia's new Cee'd and although it replaces existing models in the Hyundai range, it looks like a huge step forward for the company. Hyundai have upped their image with the incredibly successful Coupe and hope that the Arnejs will take them forward in the mainstream markets.
The Coupe itself gets a new facelift late in 2006 for the 2007 model year. Despite the huge success of the car, prices are expected to be raised only slightly in order to maintain the Coupe's dominant place in the market. Over the last couple of years there have been numerous new coupes released yet the Hyundai is almost on its own in the sub £20,000 price category. The demise of Toyota's very popular Celica is sure to leave even more openings for Hyundai to dominate this market. Mitsubishi's new Eclipse could tread on its toes to some extent, but only limited numbers of the new Eclipse will be released so our expectation is that the Hyundai will continue to dominate this market sector.
A new Wrangler is expected early in 2007 followed by the Compass and Patriot later in the year. It seems that Jeep is a name that is attractive to UK buyers, and the company are planning to take their share of 4x4 sales, despite increasing competition from other marques.
The new Cee'd will appear in the spring of 2007.
Naturally, the V50 based XC50 will be a smaller vehicle than the company's XC70 and XC90, but it looks to have all the style of the bigger cross roaders, and we'd expect it to be a somewhat less expensive to buy and run. The number of new SUVs available never ceases to amaze us. Only a few years ago, this was a niche market served, for the most part, by specialist companies. Suddenly every major company was rushing to get an SUV to market, and now it seems most are keen to get a second or third SUV on the market to make sure they don't miss out through lack of choice. At launch the XC50 is expected to be available with a choice of 165 or 218 bhp 2.5 litre engines, both of which already feature in existing Volvos.
