Three new special edition Minis join the fold in September 2005. If BMW are thrilled by the phenomenal success of the Mini, and no doubt the are, then they must be even more pleased about the lengths that we go to add extras to them.
The existing Salt, Pepper and Chilli flavours will be supplemented by the three new special edition packs that are launched in September, offering new ways to customise your Mini. Although buying a pack isn't quite the same as adding your own selected options, prospective owners will be well advised to check out the details of the new packs as it is claimed they will offer a bundle of features for less than the cost of the individual options. They may also further improve the already good residual costs of cars as packs are often more highly regarded by buyers of second hand cars than the individual options that they are made from.
Unlike some packs, the new mini option packs are restricted to particular cars.
For the Mini One, buyers should look at the Seven pack which revives a name from the early days of the original Austin Mini. Priced at just 1,785 the Seven pack includes air conditioning, leather and 15" alloys which are all very popular additions to the basic mini.
For the Mini Cooper, the 'Park Lane' spec costs an extra 3,155. This includes automatic air conditioning, chrome mirrors, leather interior and 16" alloys.
Buyers of the top of the range Cooper S can opt for the Checkmate version which will have a premium of 2,450 over the standard S, bringing its total price to a whopping 17,635. However, for the extra dosh you do get a great checkerboard livery and other styling features that set the Checkmate apart visually from the regular Cooper S. You also get 17" alloys.
Despite the perceived value of the new features, buyers should consider whether these options add features that they really want; with some of the packs you're paying for the styling changes, and you may prefer to attract less attention by avoiding such changes. And while larger wheels improve performance on good surfaces in dry conditions, with the very largest wheels you can sometimes find that ride quality and handling in the wet suffers as a result.
