New Cars
|
Replacing a popular model is never easy; manufacturers of the top cars are under enormous pressure to deliver when they change a bestseller. We look at one or two of the latest new releases to see how they fare against the cars that they replaced.
Porsche Boxster 987
Porsche's 987 Boxster certainly had a tough act to follow; the outgoing Boxster 986 was a fantastic car with great handling, stylish looks and a lovely engine. Despite its high price relative to competitors it sold quite well, thanks no doubt to its bomb proof residual value. In any case, the Boxster has always been outstanding value for money compared with the 911 line up; in our opinion it has always offered a driving experience almost on a par with the 911s at a considerably smaller price. | | Of course, as expected, Porsche came up trumps with the replacement. The new car is so similar in many ways to the predecessor, but everything about it is improved just that little bit. This is no mean feat as there was so little room for improvement. The new car is sharper, more powerful and of course quicker. And the style has improved just that little bit. Many are critical of new Porsches because they tend to be quite similar to the outgoing models; yes, they do tend to retain a lot of similarities with the models they replace, but better that than them being changed to look like every other car on the road.
