Packing Away
Procession Part 1 Procession Part 2 Procession Part 3 Meadowside Part 1 Meadowside Part 2 Queen & Court

Why do we attempt to organise out-door events in Britain's unpredictable temperate climate? Beset by the usual list of 'challenges' the team returned to a wet and muddy Meadowside. A playground had been built just where the Dodgems should be and football posts had mysteriously sprouted in the middle of the arena. I nice man from the council arrived and removed the goalposts but he wasn't able to remove the playground.

Despite this, by Saturday lunchtime it was still damp but everything was ready. What could possibly go wrong - well...

The turnout for the procession was great and it went on forever. Obviously it was late and there was the usual frantic dash to get the money off the floats. Then a lorry got stock and totally blocked Currants Farm Road for over an hour. There followed a fun packed afternoon headlined by Jez Avery on both push bike and motorbike (not at the same time).

Although it never quite actually rained (very hard) it wasn't particularly dry either. However, the event finally had to come to a close at 10pm.

Packing away started smoothly until our large van got stuck in the mud for an hour. A gentle tug with an even larger van borrowed from the Fair eventually got us on the move again. Eventually everything was safely tucked up back in the store and it was all over for another year.

2008 Carnival Queen and Attendants
2008 Queen & Court
Romaine Lee - Age 15
Carnival Queen

I thoroughly enjoyed being the Carnival Queen for 2008, it was one of the best experiences I've had and one I won't be forgetting. I met some great people over the course of being Queen, including my two fabulous Princesses, Mollie and Calley. We had so many laughs and I can definitely say that the next Queen to take over will love it and have so much fun. I've taken away some amazing memories from being Queen over the past year, and I would just like to say thank you to everyone for the fantastic opportunity and support.

Calley Foyster - Age 8, Princess

I first entered the selection for Carnival Princess in 2007 but wasn't picked and I was very disappointed. So I tried again in 2008 and was very excited to be chosen. The very next day I was having my measurements taken for my dress and my photo was in the newspaper!

We were crowned at the Bocking May Fayre and that started a wonderful year full of fun and laughter. I have made lots of new friends, smiled and waved at thousands of people and had my photo taken hundreds of times. I especially liked Braintree Carnival as all my school friends came to watch and also Burnham on Crouch as it was a torch lit procession at night!

At each carnival we were treated like real royalty with a Carnival Court lunch or tea which made me feel very special.

At Christmas we all went to visit the hospice and homes around the area to deliver cards and say hello, which made lots of people happy.

Romaine and Mollie have been flab and I love them both very much and I have had the best time ever being Braintree Carnival Princess!

Mollie Baker - Age 7, Princess

The past year as a Carnival Princess has been magnificent. I have made some good new friends. I would like to say thank you to Romaine, the carnival Queen for looking after me and Calley, the other Princess who was kind and funny. Thank you to the judges for picking me, also to Pat and Robert for driving us everywhere and making sure we were safe. A big thank you also to the carnival committee for organising my fabulous year.

I really loved going to all those carnivals, especially Burnham because it was at night and everything looked really pretty lit up.

I will miss being a carnival princess and I really don't want to give up my tiara but I hope the next princesses have as, much fun as we did. I am really grateful to everyone who was involved and I will never forget my wonderful year.

2008 Project and Donations
Project Little Havens Children's Hospice Project

Little Havens Children's Hospice opened its doors in March 1998, and was the first children's hospice in the South East of England. There was a desperate need for a children's hospice to care for families with children affected by life?limiting and life?threatening illnesses in Essex.

Little Havens, is a sanctuary for children and families. Parents and siblings benefit immeasurably from the home?from?home environment, in which they can take a break from the strain of constant care, and concentrate on being a family. The daily toll of caring for a child with life?limiting or life?threatening condition places huge emotional, physical, mental and often financial strain upon the whole family.

Our current annual running costs amount to a staggering £2.1 million, and with very limited government funding we are reliant on the local community's generosity kindness and support to enable us to continue caring for the children and families who so desperately need the services we provide at Little Havens.

Project East Anglia's Children's Hospice Project

East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) aims to maximise the quality of life for children and young people with a life?limiting or life?threatening condition, and their families.

In addition to the all?important end of life care that is always a priority, our services include ongoing respite care, family support, music therapy, assisted play and hydrotherapy. Our aim is to enable the child and their family to make the most of their precious time together and reach their full potential, whatever that may be. We also provide bereavement counseling for parents and siblings, and our care staff are on hand for as long as the family needs support. The care and support we provide is totally free, providing fun, friendship, laughter and learning to help children and their families make the most of their precious time together.

Presentation

Carnival Queen Romaine Lee and Princess Mollie Baker presented a cheque for £1000 to Victoria Beckinsdale from Little Havens Children's Hospice. Another for the same amount was also presented to Graham Butland from East Anglia Children's Hospice. Carnival Chairman, Martin Green is also pictured.

2008 Programme Article - Words of Wisdom

Note: The following article (well it's more of a list really) appeared in the 2008 Programme. Once again it's primary source was the ever dependable t'Interweb.

  • Procrastinate now; don't put it off.
  • Half the people you know are below average.
  • The sooner you fall behind the more time you'll have to catch up.
  • The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
  • Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  • If at first you DO succeed, try not to look surprised!
  • When all else fails, read the directions.
  • Honesty is the best policy. But insanity is a better defence.
  • I intend to live forever - so far, so good.
  • If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends?
  • There are 3 kinds of people: those who can count and those who can't.
  • Shin: A device for finding furniture in the dark.
  • It's not an optical illusion; it just looks like one.
  • I like you. You remind me of when I was young and stupid.
  • I say no to drugs, but they don't listen.
  • All those who believe in telekinesis, raise my hand.
  • Help Wanted: Telepath. You know where to apply.
  • Sign on baby's bib: SPIT HAPPENS
  • Smash forehead on keyboard to continue.....
  • As far as we know, our computer has never had an undetected error.
  • Never knock on Death's door. Ring the doorbell and run. (He hates that.)
  • Lead me not into temptation. I can find the way myself.
  • Why do you press harder on the remote control when you know that the battery is dead?
  • Tell a man that there are 400 billion stars and he'll believe you. Tell him a bench has wet paint and he has to touch it.
  • Don't use a big word when a diminutive one will do.
  • Some people are like Slinkys, they are good for nothing but can still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.
  • My imaginary friend thinks you have some serious issues.
  • If we weren't all crazy, we would go insane.
  • Everyone hates me because I'm paranoid.
  • All generalisations are false, even this one.
  • I know it sounds like I'm in denial, but I'm not.
  • As long as I can remember, I've had amnesia.
  • Work fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours.
  • Education is what you get from reading the small print. Experience is what you get from not reading it.
  • If a man is standing in the middle of a forest speaking and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?
  • It's a big mistake to allow any mechanical object to realise that you are in a hurry.

2008 Billy's Blog Aged 9¾ - My Tenth Carnival
Billy Although I wrote in my diary last year that my diary last year would be my last diary. It turns out to be only a half-truth. Technically it was my last diary as this is now a blog as nobody writes a diary any more. Therefore, as it is a blog you now have to go online to read it so I am only allowed to put a summary of it here due to data protection or copyright or a local charter or a bylaw or health and safety or something. Set off bright and early but Dad forgot his blue folder so had to go back for it. Set off again but Dad forgot his cordless drill so had to go back for it. Set off once more but Dad forgot his camera so had to go back for it. Set off and Dad didn't forget anything this time but went back just in case.
Played I-Spy with Izzy but she is only 2 and only knows things beginning with Blue and it's always 'sky'. Therefore this soon got a bit boring. Then played 'tig' with Izzy but this also very quickly got boring I can never win.
It was very hot and I felt a bit sick. Dad eventually agreed to put on the air-con despite the current petrol prices.
Stopped on the way and had a KFC Bucket between us for dinner.
Arrived in Braintree about 2pm just as everyone was going to dinner. Dad wouldn't let me go the meanie.
[Read the rest on the website] Had fish and chips for dinner.
[Read the rest on the website] Carnival Day
[Read the rest on the website] Drove back to Leeds - slept all of the way.
[Read the rest on the website] Back to school.
[Read the rest on the website]

I have just read through the blog and it's not the most interesting I have every written. This is primarily due to all of the [Read the rest on the website]. However, this did make it a lot easier to write and don't bother checking the website as I haven't really written any more. (As you can now see - Ed) It was just a ploy I used against Dad so I didn't have to write as much.
