The spirit of the Caribbean came to town as the people of Braintree captured the carnival spirit with a colourful display of fun and laughter. Once again thousands of people lined the streets for the procession of floats and later attended Meadowside for an afternoon packed full of entertainment.
As the procession wound its way through the streets of Braintree, gathering on its way another record Street Collection, Phase One Steel Orchestra played to the waiting public at Meadowside. This lightened the spirits as a light shower of rain and ominous skies threatened.
The fun really got underway after the official opening by the 2001 Carnival Queen, Eryn Bayes. The threatened rain failed to materialise and the crowds were entertained by the likes of top comedy act The Tumblairs, the Music Fun Factory and the Grosvenor School of Dance.
Despite its omission from the official programme, the traditional Wrestling bout took place in the early evening. Then the sun finally broke through and a gloriously bright evening saw one of Essex's top live acts Remorse play the night away.

When I was picked to represent Braintree and Bocking as Carnival Queen, I was shocked
because the other girls there deserved it more than me!
My first job was to be crowned and I was very nervous. As soon as I stepped out of
the car to be crowned, I ripped my dress! I have enjoyed the experience a lot, because
I got to go to other carnivals and meet all the Carnival Queens and Princesses and
meet lots of new people. I also liked going to the Elderly Peoples Home and the Baby
Unit at Christmas to give out the cards.
Everyone has been very nice to me and I'm very thankful. I'd like to thank Pat and
Robert for everything they have done for the girls and I, especially with making the
dresses, and the Carnival Committee for making Braintree Carnival a success, as usual.
Thank you to all my friends and family for their support, not to forget Megan and
Charlotte for being great throughout the year, keep smiling! I'd also like to wish
next year's Court the best of luck and I know you'll be great!

My year as Carnival Princess was lots of fun and everyone who looked after us was
very nice. The best part about being Princess is you get to go on lots of rides and
go to different towns for Carnivals. I will be sad to end my year as Princess and
hope to stay friends with Charlotte and Eryn because they have been lots of fun.
Thank you to everyone who made this a special year for me.

When I entered the princess competition last March, my mum told me not to be too upset
if I didn't win. When I did win I was really surprised and very excited.
Pat made me a beautiful pink dress and I wore a pretty tiara for the carnival. I was
really excited and loved going on the float. I had a brilliant day even though it
was raining sometimes.
Thank you to everyone who looked after me and to Pat for my lovely dress. Thank you
to Eryn for being so kind and me and Megan will always stay friends. I have loved
being carnival Princess.

- First Stop Centre
- St. John Ambulance
- Braintree Physically Handicapped Club
- New Directions Residential Centre
- Braintree Brownies
- Deanery Gardens Tenants and Residents Association

Date: |
Sunday 9th September 2001 |
Venue: |
Riverside Swimming Pool |
Distance: |
24km (15 miles) |
Start: |
9.00 a.m. (latest 9.15 a.m.) |
Stages: |
15 (refreshments half way) |
Most of the 15 mile route was along the Flitch Way which was formed from the old
railway track between Braintree and Dunmow. The only deviation is around Dunmow
where houses have been built on the old track. This is a well worn route for the
walk and was chosen due to the possible Foot and Mouth restrictions.
For the first time that anyone could remember, the walk included a group of
wheelchair bound participants. This is unusual as footpaths are not usually
designed with wheelchairs in mind.

Unfortunately there were no articles of any note in the programme in 2001. Let's
hope the writers sort themselves out ready for 2002. At least Billy can be relied
upon to help fill the pages.

I is writing again due to popular demand but first I must respond to some of the
criticisms that have been talked about my previous articles. These usually concern
my granma (no it's not the one about her being home in bed although she is as it
appens). It's about my granma and puncuaton. It's not my fault. I have nut yet
learnt how to use the keyboard on Dad's computa propa yet. Only cos he won't let
me use it very often and when he does finally give in I'm only allowed to play with
my Tellytubbies CD. I'm not even allowed to serve the Intanet cos Dad says it full
of Prawns.
So I have to tell Dad wot to writ but he can't always understand wot I says so he
writs it down wrong. So it's his fault the filly old buffer.
Another story that I is hearin is that I was refusing to writ this year unless I is
paid. Wot rubbish. However, as Dad keeps sayin, I is a growin lad and expensive to
keep and bananas is not growin on trees you now. So is it to much to ask that a ickle
chap be paid for quality like this. My lawyers and accountants is lookin into it.
Anyway, enuff of that, this is wot I got up to at last years Carnvul.
We is off to the Carnvul agin. Dad is dead excited cos he has got a new cordless
drill that he wants to use. Sad init. We is arrivin bout tea time. Dad helps
drill the last hole for the poles and then pretends he is worn out from all the hard
work.
It's Elecshun Day - whatever that means? I stays with Granma and Granpa this morning
and we play with my animals until I let them watch some cartoons.
I helps Mum and Dad and their friends on the Carnvul field in the afternoon. We is
building things out of bits of wood again just like last year. Mum and her friend
Rachel paint bits of wood, Dad drills holes in them with his new drill, their other
friends tie them together with bits of string and I plays with Martha Dog. I thinks
I've got the best job.
Is up early only to find Mum and Dad is already up and about. Dad has been up all
night and Mum reckons he was watching the elecshun results. Turns out he had a poorly
tum-tum and was ick all nite. Says he had a dodgy quiche for is lunch. I jokes
that it serves him right for eating quiche the big girls blouse. He says that's not
funny and runs off to the bathroom.
I don't know who he is but I is told I is off to see Elecshun Count with Auntie Ringo
Dog. Instead we go to a big room where lots of people is countin bits off paper.
They is puttin them in towers but I notice they are all different sizes. I build
one big tower when no one is looking which is much better until it falls over.
In the afternoon I go shopping with Uncle Keiff and Auntie Tracey and my friend
Hollie. I like Hollie and we play runnin up and down while her Mummy and Daddy try
to find us.
When we gets back Dad is upset as there is no ride on the Bumpy Cars this afternoon.
Nana and Grandad is here. Didn't know they live here in Braintree aswell as at home
in Leeds. They live in a place called HolidayInnExpress with lots of other people
and a man sits in their front room behind a desk. Funny I've never been to see them
here before.
I fell asleep on the way back to Granmas last night were we is sleepin and missed
the Barbque. I is gutted but musn't let it get me down as it's Carnvul Day today.
In the morning I get to play with Charlot and Imgen who come to the Carnvul field
with their Mummy and Daddy. We not play with baby Livia as she is still in her
Mummys tummy.
I ave a grate afternoon goin on lots of rides and eatin lots of stuff. Someone buys
me a nice balloon that I have to hold on to titely to stop it floating away. There
was so much goin on that I can't remember wot else I did.
When it is getting late, I take Granma and Granpa home cos they is getting very
tired. I ave a nice relaxin bath after another stressful Carnvul week.
Sorry but I is to tired to writ today.
